Samantha Grace

School Counselor, Hope High School, Providence

Supports students in grades 9–12 with academic guidance, social-emotional support, and preparation for college, career, and life readiness. Before this role, Samantha worked as an elementary school counselor and spent 17 years as an educator in Woonsocket.

As a board member, Samantha is eager to grow professionally and collaborate with fellow counselors. Through this leadership role, she aims to advocate for the profession, support colleagues, and contribute to the advancement of school counseling in Rhode Island.

Kristen Luongo

School Counselor, Smithfield High School

Entering her fourth year as a school counselor at Smithfield High School, following 16 years of service as a Special Educator at SHS. The transition into school counseling has provided the opportunity to support students more directly in their academic, career, and social/emotional development.

She was recently honored as the Rhode Island School Counselor of the Year, a recognition of her commitment to the profession and student advocacy. As a selected emerging leader, Kristen attended the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) and the ASCA Annual Conference in Kansas City, MO. She also participated in the North Atlantic Regional SCA Leaders Mid-Year LDI in Exton, PA.

Kristen currently serves as co-secretary of the Rhode Island School Counselor Association (RISCA) and is an active member of the RISCA Annual Conference Planning Committee.

Through her role on the RISCA Board, she advocates for policies that support the implementation of comprehensive school counseling programs across the state. Her collaborative work with board members focuses on addressing systemic inequities within districts and fostering meaningful change to strengthen support systems for students.She looks forward to continuing this important work alongside a team of dedicated leaders in the school counseling profession.


Rose Karmoh-Thorp

School Counselor, Mount Pleasant High School, Providence
Now entering her fourth year at Mount Pleasant High School, Rose has been with the Providence district for five years. Prior to that, she served as a middle school counselor in North Providence. She is a strong advocate and enthusiastic supporter of her students, and she enjoys collaborating with students and their families to identify the best tools for success.

Rose is passionate about her involvement with RISCA and has been honored to volunteer with the conference planning committee and in other advocacy roles over the past several years. In her new capacity as a RISCA board member, she is excited to continue working alongside fellow school counselors who are making a meaningful impact on the profession. She hopes to help highlight the ongoing wealth of support, knowledge, and camaraderie that RISCA offers to all school counselors who choose to engage with it.

Ramonita Martinez

School Counselor, Leviton Dual Language, Providence

Ramonita will be entering her fifth year as a school counselor at Leviton Dual Language. At Leviton, she has been able to build positive relationships with students, families and teachers. 

When working with students, Ramonita uses person-centered and solution-focused therapy to best support her students. 

Prior to becoming a counselor, Ramonita spent 10 years in the mental health sector as a Mental Health Clinician at Gateway Healthcare, Inc. and Meeting Street. Ramonita is passionate about her work with students and families and believes that building relationships with students and families is the key to a student’s success. 

Ramonita is excited to be part of the RISCA board to continue advocating for the education and mental health of our children.
